The migration of monarch butterflies is one of nature’s most remarkable phenomena. Every autumn, millions of these orange-and-black butterflies travel up to 4,800 kilometres from Canada and the United States to their winter home in the mountains of central Mexico. The journey takes approximately two months, and the butterflies fly at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour.
What makes this migration particularly extraordinary is that no single butterfly completes the entire round trip. The butterflies that fly south in autumn will die in Mexico after laying eggs in spring. It is their grandchildren or great-grandchildren — born three to four generations later — that eventually return to Canada. Scientists are still trying to understand how these young butterflies, which have never made the journey before, navigate back to the exact same trees their ancestors left months earlier.
