🎤 Model Answer (2 minutes):
I’d like to talk about my father, who has been my biggest inspiration throughout my life.
My dad is a mechanical engineer, and he’s been working in the field for over 30 years now. Growing up, I used to watch him work on various projects, and I was always amazed by his dedication and problem-solving skills.
What really inspires me about him is that he built his career completely from scratch. He came from a small village and didn’t have many resources, but he taught himself engineering through books and practical experience. He worked incredibly hard — sometimes working double shifts — to provide for our family and fund his own education.
Despite all the challenges he faced, he never complained or gave up. I remember one time when he lost his job during an economic downturn, but instead of feeling defeated, he used that time to learn new skills and eventually started his own small business.
He inspires me because he showed me that with determination and hard work, you can overcome any obstacle. Whenever I face difficulties in my own career, I think of my dad’s journey and it motivates me to keep pushing forward. I feel incredibly proud to be his child, and I hope one day I can be even half as resilient as he is.

🃏 Cue Card 2: A Place You’d Like to Visit
Describe a place you would like to visit in the future. You should say:
- where it is
- how you learned about it
- what you would do there
- and explain why you want to visit this place
🎤 Model Answer:
One place I’ve always dreamed of visiting is Iceland. It’s a small island country in the North Atlantic, known for its stunning natural landscapes.
I first learned about Iceland through a documentary I watched a few years ago about the Northern Lights. The footage was absolutely breathtaking — I couldn’t believe such a magical place existed. Since then, I’ve been following several travel bloggers who’ve been to Iceland, and every photo I see makes me want to go even more.
If I had the chance to visit, there are so many things I’d love to do. First and foremost, I’d want to see the Northern Lights with my own eyes — I think that would be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’d also love to visit the Blue Lagoon, which is a famous geothermal spa, and maybe go whale watching off the coast.
The main reason I want to visit Iceland is that it’s so completely different from anywhere I’ve been before. The combination of volcanoes, glaciers, hot springs, and dramatic coastlines is just incredible. I think spending time in such untouched nature would be incredibly refreshing and would give me a whole new perspective.
Useful phrases: dreamed of visiting, absolutely breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime experience, a whole new perspective
🃏 Cue Card 3: A Skill You Learned Recently
Describe a skill you learned recently. You should say:
- what the skill is
- how you learned it
- how long it took
- and explain how useful this skill is
🎤 Model Answer:
I’d like to talk about a skill I picked up recently, which is cooking Japanese food — specifically, making sushi and ramen from scratch.
I started learning about six months ago when I moved to Japan and realized that eating out every day was getting quite expensive. At first, I just watched YouTube tutorials and followed simple recipes. Then I found this amazing online course that taught traditional Japanese cooking techniques step by step.
It took me about two months to get the basics down — things like preparing sushi rice properly, making dashi broth, and slicing fish correctly. I’m still learning and improving, but I can now make a decent bowl of ramen and basic sushi rolls.
This skill has been incredibly useful for several reasons. First, it’s saved me a lot of money — I spend about half of what I used to on food. Second, it’s a great way to de-stress after work. There’s something very meditative about the process of cooking. And third, it’s actually helped me connect with Japanese culture on a deeper level. When I cook for my colleagues, they’re always pleasantly surprised and it sparks great conversations.
Useful phrases: picked up recently, from scratch, get the basics down, a great way to de-stress, on a deeper level
🃏 Cue Card 4: A Memorable Event
Describe a memorable event in your life. You should say:
- what the event was
- when and where it happened
- who was there with you
- and explain why it was memorable
🎤 Model Answer:
One of the most memorable events in my life was my university graduation ceremony, which took place about seven years ago.
The ceremony was held in the main auditorium of my university in Hanoi. It was a beautiful sunny day in June, and the hall was packed with hundreds of graduates and their families. My parents, my sister, and a few of my closest friends were all there to celebrate with me.
What made it so special was that I was the first person in my family to graduate from university. When they called my name and I walked across the stage to receive my diploma, I could see my mom crying tears of joy in the audience. That moment is something I’ll never forget.
After the ceremony, my family took me out for a big celebration dinner. My dad gave a speech about how proud he was, and even though he’s usually quite reserved, I could tell he was really emotional. It was memorable because it represented years of hard work and sacrifice — not just mine, but my parents’ as well. It felt like a turning point in my life, the beginning of a new chapter.
Useful phrases: packed with, tears of joy, I’ll never forget, a turning point, the beginning of a new chapter
🃏 Cue Card 5: An Important Decision
Describe an important decision you made. You should say:
- what the decision was
- when you made it
- how you made this decision
- and explain why it was important
🎤 Model Answer:
The most important decision I’ve ever made was probably moving to Japan to work, which I decided about three years ago.
At the time, I was working at a comfortable job in Vietnam with a decent salary, and everything was going well. But I’d always been curious about living abroad, and when I received a job offer from a Japanese company, I had to make a really tough choice.
I spent about two weeks thinking it over. I made a pros and cons list, talked to friends and family who had lived overseas, and researched everything I could about life in Japan. My parents were initially worried, but they ultimately supported my decision. What finally convinced me was the realization that if I didn’t try, I’d always wonder “what if.”
This decision was important because it completely changed the trajectory of my life. Living in Japan has helped me grow professionally — I’ve gained international experience and improved my language skills significantly. But more importantly, it’s helped me grow as a person. I’ve become more independent, more adaptable, and more open-minded. Looking back, I’m really glad I took that leap of faith.
Useful phrases: thinking it over, pros and cons list, what finally convinced me, the trajectory of my life, a leap of faith
