📋 PART 1: Introduction & Interview (4-5 phút)

Questions:

Topic 1: Ambitions & Future Plans

  1. What are your plans for the next five years?
  2. Did you have the same ambitions when you were younger?
  3. Do you think it’s important to have goals in life?

Topic 2: Communication 4. How do you usually keep in touch with friends? 5. Do you prefer phone calls or text messages? 6. Has the way people communicate changed much?

Topic 3: Art & Creativity 7. Are you interested in any form of art? 8. Do you think creativity is important in daily life? 9. Did you do any creative activities as a child?

📝 Model Answers Part 1:

Q1: “In the next five years, I’d like to advance to a senior engineering position and possibly start a small side project of my own — maybe a tech startup. I’m also hoping to improve my Japanese to a business-fluent level and perhaps buy a house in Japan. Those are ambitious goals, but I think having clear targets keeps me motivated.”

Q2: “Not exactly. When I was younger, I actually wanted to be a game developer — I was obsessed with video games! But as I grew older and gained more experience in the tech industry, my interests shifted towards web development and project management. I think it’s natural for ambitions to evolve as you mature.”

Q3: “Absolutely. I think having goals gives your life direction and purpose. Without them, it’s easy to just drift along without making progress. That said, I also think it’s important to be flexible — sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you didn’t plan for. So I’d say set goals but hold them loosely.”

Q4: “I mainly use LINE and Messenger to keep in touch with friends — quick messages, voice notes, and the occasional video call. For friends back in Vietnam, video calls are essential because we can’t meet in person often. I also try to meet local friends for coffee or dinner at least once or twice a month.”

Q5: “It depends on the situation. For quick updates or making plans, I prefer texting because it’s efficient and I can reply in my own time. But for anything emotional or complex, I’d rather make a phone call — tone of voice conveys so much that text just can’t capture. I find that misunderstandings happen much more easily over text.”

Q6: “Enormously! When my parents were young, they had to write letters or make expensive long-distance phone calls. Now we can video-call anyone in the world for free. Social media has also changed how we communicate — it’s made us more connected in some ways, but I’d argue less deeply connected. We have hundreds of ‘friends’ online but sometimes struggle to have meaningful conversations face to face.”

Q7: “I wouldn’t call myself an artist, but I do appreciate photography. I enjoy capturing moments when I travel or even just during daily walks. There’s something satisfying about framing a scene and finding the right angle. I’ve also recently started watching documentaries about architecture, which I find fascinating.”

Q8: “I think creativity is hugely important, even outside of traditionally ‘creative’ fields. In my work as a software engineer, creative thinking is essential for problem-solving — finding elegant solutions to complex problems is basically an art form. In daily life, creativity helps with everything from cooking to organizing your space to resolving conflicts.”

Q9: “Yes, I used to draw quite a lot as a child — I filled notebooks with sketches of cartoon characters and robots. I also enjoyed building things with blocks and creating little stories. Looking back, those activities probably helped develop the problem-solving skills I use in my career today.”

📋 PART 2: Individual Long Turn (3-4 phút)

Cue Card:

Describe a change that has improved your life. You should say:

  • what the change was
  • when it happened
  • how it has affected your daily life
  • and explain why it improved your life

📝 Model Answer Part 2:

The change I’d like to talk about is my decision to start waking up early — at 5:30 AM every day — which I began about a year ago.

Before this change, I was a typical night owl. I’d stay up until 1 or 2 AM watching videos or coding, then struggle to wake up in the morning, often rushing out the door without breakfast. I constantly felt tired and stressed, and my productivity during work hours was inconsistent.

The turning point came when I read about the concept of a “morning routine” and how many successful people swear by waking up early. I was skeptical at first, but I decided to give it a try for 30 days. The first week was brutal — I felt exhausted and almost gave up. But by the second week, my body started adjusting, and I began to notice some real benefits.

Now, my mornings follow a consistent routine: I wake up at 5:30, do 20 minutes of light exercise, have a proper breakfast, and then spend about 45 minutes studying English or working on personal projects. By the time my workday officially starts at 9, I’ve already accomplished something meaningful, which gives me a sense of momentum for the rest of the day.

This change has improved my life in several ways. Firstly, my energy levels throughout the day are much more stable — I no longer experience that mid-afternoon crash. Secondly, I’m more productive at work because I’m fully awake and focused from the start. Thirdly, it’s given me time for personal development that I didn’t have before. And perhaps most importantly, it’s improved my mental health — starting the day on my own terms, rather than in a panic, makes me feel much more in control of my life.

📋 PART 3: Two-way Discussion (4-5 phút)

Questions:

  1. Why do people find it difficult to make positive changes in their lives?
  2. Do you think technology has made it easier or harder for people to change their habits?
  3. Is it better to make big changes all at once or small changes gradually?
  4. How has society’s attitude toward change evolved over time?
  5. Can education help people become more adaptable to change?

📝 Model Answers Part 3:

Q1: “I think there are several psychological barriers to change. Firstly, humans are creatures of habit — our brains are wired to prefer the familiar because it feels safe. Secondly, many positive changes require short-term discomfort for long-term gain, and our brains tend to prioritize immediate gratification. For example, everyone knows exercise is good for them, but the couch is so much more comfortable right now. Additionally, fear of failure plays a huge role — people would rather stay in their comfort zone than risk trying something new and potentially failing.”

Q2: “Technology is a double-edged sword in this regard. On one hand, apps and wearable devices have made it much easier to track habits, set reminders, and stay accountable. For instance, fitness trackers and meditation apps have helped millions of people develop healthier routines. On the other hand, technology also enables unhealthy habits — social media addiction, excessive screen time, and the constant distraction of notifications make it harder to focus on self-improvement. I think the key is using technology intentionally rather than letting it control you.”

Q3: “Research generally suggests that small, gradual changes are more sustainable than dramatic overhauls. When you try to change everything at once, it’s overwhelming and you’re more likely to burn out and revert to old habits. For example, if someone wants to get healthier, starting with a 10-minute daily walk is more sustainable than suddenly committing to an intense gym routine. However, there are some situations where a clean break is necessary — like quitting smoking, which some studies suggest is more effective when done cold turkey rather than gradually reducing.”

Q4: “I think society has become more open to change compared to past generations. In traditional societies, stability and continuity were highly valued — people were expected to follow the same career, live in the same area, and maintain the same lifestyle as their parents. Nowadays, there’s much more emphasis on personal growth, reinvention, and adaptability. The concept of ’lifelong learning’ and career changes are widely accepted. However, this rapid pace of change can also be stressful, and I think many people feel pressure to constantly improve rather than being content with who they are.”

Q5: “Absolutely. Education plays a crucial role in developing adaptability. Schools that teach critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience — rather than just memorizing facts — produce students who are better equipped to handle change. For example, project-based learning exposes students to unexpected challenges, which builds their ability to adapt. I also think exposure to different cultures and perspectives through education helps people become more open-minded and less resistant to change. The education system should prepare students not just for today’s world, but for a future that’s constantly evolving.”
